At J.S. Benson Woodworking & Design, we specialize in crafting high-end custom doors and windows tailored toward our clients' unique tastes. With over 30 years experience behind us, we can design custom windows and doors that replicate any desired historical period or architectural style. You'll find nothing mass-produced here. Everything we do is handcrafted to exacting standards for truly one-of-a-kind results.
We primarily work with sustainably harvested mahogany, but we'll also use other hardwoods if design specifications call for it. We've long been strong proponents of responsible forestry and eco-friendly manufacturing processes. That's why our LEED® credit eligible custom doors and windows are built using lumber certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), an organization devoted to preventing deforestation.

Since 1978, J.S. Benson Woodworking & Design has created custom doors and true divided light windows. These are the questions we hear most often when we talk to prospective clients.
* * *
How much do your products cost?
Due to the fact that our windows and doors are not off-the-shelf, every window and door's price is different depending on the size and specifications. For a ballpark quote, please fax or send us your blue prints with all pertinent information.
What types of hardware do you use?
All cast metal in various finishes and styles. Samples of the types of window hardware that we used are at the site of our supplier, Bronze Craft, which has been making premium hardware since 1944.
With true divided lights and insulated glass, how narrow a muntin can you provide?
7/8"
What are your spacer options?
Aluminum spacers are available either painted or anodized. Warm edge spacers by Edgetech are available in many colors. The warm edge spacer is a patented structural foam that reduces condensation.
Why don't you make SDL (simulated divided light windows)? Aren't they cheaper?
In our experience, they are sometimes cheaper in the short-run but not in the long-run. Our true divided light (TDL) muntins allow broken panes to be replaced using the extra "attic stock,” which we provide with each job using local help. SDL sash, when broken, is expensive and time-consuming to repair, often requiring new sash to be made. The thermal performance of our TDL warm edge glazing is on par or better than that of monolithic SDL glazing. Our warm-edge spacer allows us to build insulating units with a wide selection of restoration glass. This cannot be accomplished with an SDL system. There are many other technical reasons why we have chosen to specialize in TDL sash, but leave it to say that our customers' enthusiastic response to the look of these windows has been the biggest one.

Since 1978, J.S. Benson Woodworking & Design has been serving a wide range of clients from throughout New England and beyond. Here, by and large, is how the process goes:
Estimating Costs: To start an estimate for custom doors or windows, we need to talk to you about quantities and sizes. We will also need you to specify certain options such as hardware finish, glazing type, wood species, screens, and any other important specifications.
Designing: We work with your architect and builder to coordinate aesthetic details with practical design considerations. We can send CAD drawings electronically to expedite the design approvals.
Manufacturing: Our broad knowledge of wood, hardware, finishing systems, and architectural history allows us to build an extremely durable product. Down to the most intricate hardware detail, every aspect of our work is tailored to perform above the expectations of our discriminating clientele. Installation is not included in the price of our packages.
Guarantees: Cabot guarantees their 3-part finishing system (which we use) for 15 years. Our glass manufacturer guarantees insulated units for 10 years. In addition, we guarantee our windows and doors for 5 years.

J.S. Benson Woodworking & Design is known for its high-end custom windows and doors. We usually work in pattern mahogany.
Although we prefer to work with pattern grade mahogany, we can use most hardwoods. Where historic exactitude requires it, we can use pine. We can also laminate mahogany and other hardwoods together to give the stability and weather resistance of mahogany on the outside, leaving the other desired hardwood (such as ash) visible on the inside.
