Estimating Costs: To start an estimate for custom doors or windows, we need to talk to you about quantities and sizes. We will also need you to specify certain options such as hardware finish, glazing type, wood species, screens, and any other important specifications.

Designing: We work with your architect and builder to coordinate aesthetic details with practical design considerations. We can send CAD drawings electronically to expedite the design approvals.

In case that you are interested in our styles, it will please you to know that our styles vary in a very wide range but mostly revolve around modern classic and historic reproduction. In some particular cases where our clients require it of us, we can even include pine in the woodworking process for the historical purposes and exactitude. We enjoy in these historic endeavors pretty much so if you are in need of such services, you can absolutely count on us to get it done. Restoration is a very important part of both home improvements and woodworking and we do it with pleasure.

Now, for you view, we have prepared a rather long list of installations that we do. We work with both institutional and residential installations. Reproduction, design, architecture, we prefer any style that goes in the favor of our clients as nothing is more important to us than their ultimate satisfaction. Before we start any of our projects, we like to go through all the details necessary with you and your architect, in case that you hired one so that we rest assured that all details are clear to us. After that, the only thing left to do is get the job done.

stuffManufacturing: Our broad knowledge of wood, hardware, finishing systems, and architectural history allows us to build an extremely durable product. Down to the most intricate hardware detail, every aspect of our work is tailored to perform above the expectations of our discriminating clientele.

Materials-and-Options

Materials and Options

May 23, 2018 | Ruth Dillon | Materials, Woodworking | Materials, Options

J.S. Benson Woodworking & Design, L.L.C. is known for its high-end custom windows and doors. We usually work in pattern mahogany. We do offer a range of options:

Although we prefer to work with pattern grade mahogany, we can use most hardwoods. Where historic exactitude requires it, we can use pine. We can also laminate mahogany and other hardwoods together, to give the stability and weather resistance of mahogany on the outside, leaving the other desired hardwood (such as ash) visible on the inside.

Green woodworking is also part of our services as we are quite familiar with these special techniques that are required for it and we are into all sorts home improvements, carpentry and design related to any sort of woodwork. Our love for mahogany comes from its amazing characteristics as we realized that the finest woodwork requires the finest wood and mahogany is the finest wood that you can find in the world. There some other woods that are similar in quality but nothing has the color, shape and texture of a mahogany and therefore, the finest woodworking is in mahogany.

That is why we prefer it even though it is not necessary to be only mahogany, we can combine multiple hardwoods to give you the desired product and we can include other carpentry techniques to get the best possible result. We are always opened from all sorts of suggestions and recommendations as we would be more than happy to work with your architect or a builder. All aesthetic details and practical design considerations can be easily coordinated if we work all together as the end result must be a perfect product and customer’s satisfaction. Feel free to share your ideas with us.

Hardware Options. We use various suppliers of American and European hardware in bronze, brass, stainless steel or other desired hardware finishes.

wood1Finish Options. All windows and doors can be produced either clear-sealed or primed and top-coated. For a top-coated system, we first apply Cabot’s bleed resistant coating, Tannin-Bloc, followed by Cabot’s Factory Finish oil- based Primer and top-coated with Cabot’s “Finish” with Teflon Surface Protector. Cabot guarantees this 3-part system for 15 years.

Screen Options. We can make screens to fit any door or window. We typically use either bronze or fibreglass mesh.

Window Options. We make all types of windows: single hung, double hung, picture, bow, awning, hopper, round, half round, casement, and French.

Glazing Technique. Our unique muntin profile is engineered to maximize the longevity of the glazing seal. The individual panes of the true divided light windows are set, from the inside, into a bed of silicon sealant. This forms a continuous gasket. The lights are secured by interior wooden stops, profiled to match any sticking style.

Glass. All windows can be ordered single or double-glazed depending on your specific application. We offer dual sealed insulated units using clear annealed glass. Optional insulated units include Low E coated, argon filled tempered, safety laminated and restoration glass. We recommend using LOF Low E insulated glass that has the same look as normal glass but reduces the energy used to heat and cool your home or business. The leaded stained glass is available through one of our local artisans and we are happy to work with existing panels provided by the customer.

Door Options. We manufacture mahogany stave core doors. All of our doors use mortice and tenon joinery. Teak sills are also available. We make French doors that can replicate those of any historic period. We also make custom entryways, handcrafted to last many generations.

Green-Woodworking

Green Woodworking

May 23, 2018 | Ruth Dillon | Materials, Woodworking | Green, Woodworking

Working with unseasoned or wet wood refers to green woodworking. When you work with wood that has recently felled and is freshly cut, it contains lots of water which causes shrinkage while evaporating. The shrinkage produces a tight fit which is a natural benefit because the wetness is necessary for green woodworking and that is what makes green woodworking a bit different from the rest of woodworking.

The trick is to produce softer flowing surfaces and that is one of the main techniques. By shaping green coppice wood, you get a surface with increased strength while still following the grain. This increased strength is because of the wood’s linear fibers which remain intact. Freshly cut wood remains green even after a year if you leave it in a round log before you start working on it.

Modern carpentry and green woodworking differ not only in the techniques but also in tools and set of skills that are required. Green woodworking also requires a person to know and understand that each tree differs by character and nature of wood. Therefore, green woodworking is more applied in arts than it is in home improvement industry.

Woodworking industry advanced a lot in the last ten years but in the beginning, all woodworking was green woodworking. In time, it evolved to much more sophisticated techniques. Unseasoned and pliable wood is soft and perfect for shaping, but once it has been worked, it would simply dry over time. A seasoned wood is no longer green and therefore it is not usable within the green woodworking techniques.

When it comes to carpentry and home improvements, green woodworking found its place relatively easily. Home crafts, furniture making but expressive arts as well, there are many disciplines and techniques when it comes to green woodworking.

There are many benefits of green woodworking but the most prominent ones would be its softness which makes it perfect and easy to work with hand tools and the fact that most products are made from coppiced hardwood as coppicing has proved to be a very sustainable system which gives the highest quality wood.
